Collecting Antiquities from the Middle Ages to the End of the Nineteenth Century, Wrocław, Poland, 25-28 March, 2020.

Call for papers

Dear Collegues,

University of Wrocław Institute of Art History and University of Wrocław Museum would like to invite you to take a part in the conference held on 25-28 March, 2020, in the University of Wrocław Museum. We are accepting proposals for individual papers and complete sessions on all subjects related to private and public collecting of antiquities (both ancient and prehistoric artifacts) from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century. Proposals concerning collecting of plaster casts of ancient artworks are also welcomed.
Since the Middle Ages, antiquities have always been present in collections to a greater or lesser extent. Ancient objects acquired by private collectors as well as gathered in abbeys, universities and museums have always been carriers of specific ideas and their role in collections depended on motivations lying behind the initiation of collecting activity by their owners. The aim of the conference is an attempt to capture the pan-European phenomenon of collecting of antiquities, its multifacetedness and development over the centuries.
Individual presentations should be no longer than twenty minutes. Sessions are two hours and should include four papers, each lasting twenty minutes, a chair, and an optional commentator. The official language of the conference is English.
The conference will open with an opening of the exhibition Eduard Schaubert and his collection of antiquities, and the following reception in the evening of Wednesday, March 25. Over the next three days (Thru – Sat) papers of conference contributors will be presented.
The call for papers is now open and ends on 15th July 2019. The contribution proposals including your name, institution, presentation/session title and a 150-word abstract should be emailed to agata.kubala@uwr.edu.pl or urszula.bonczuk-dawidziuk.@uwr.edu.pl Proposals for complete sessions need to include the chair and commentator’s name.
The conference fee is 100 euro and 75 euro for PhD candidates. The fee includes meals (lunches Thru-Sat, dinners Thru-Fri), conference materials and a post-conference double-blind, peer-reviewed publication.
