The museum was established by Order of the Rector of the Kazimierz Wielki University (UKW) no. 26/2016/2017 on 6 February 2017, as the Department of Museum Collections operating within the University Library. A section called the University Museum was opened within these structures. The Museum of the Kazimierz Wielki University was officially
opened on 27 June 2019, on the 50th anniversary of the university’s establishment. The museum’s mission is to collect memorabilia dating back to the times when it was a Teachers Training College (WSN) (established in 1969), which then became a Higher Pedagogical School (WSP) (1974–2000), and later the Kazimierz Wielki Academy of Bydgoszcz
(2000–2005), before finally being transformed into the Kazimierz Wielki University (2005). The core of the collection concerns the university’s development as an academic institution and commemorates the persons involved – the staff, students and alumni. One of the museum’s principle tasks is to present the scientific, academic, teaching, organizational, artistic and sports achievements of the university and its everyday life. The museum acquires documents which relate to the university’s activities: reports, diplomas (doctorates and honorary degrees), nominations for professorships, individual works, archival documents, photographs (the Andrzej Obiała Photographic Archives), recordings from many
conferences and events, information services (including student newspapers), memorabilia (insignia, banners, cups, portraits, plans, etc.), and some of the furnishings and equipment which are of importance to
the history of the university. Groups of archives dedicated to the activities of various university communities
have been established: the choir (Zespół Pieśni Dawnej – Ensemble of Ancient Songs), student clubs (Beanus), labour unions (Solidarność – Solidarity, ZNP – Polish Teachers’ Union), as well as social and sports clubs (Akademicki Krąg Instruktorski – Academic Instructors Circle; Akademicki Związek Sportowy – Academic Sports Association). At
the same time, devices, scientific apparatus and didactic equipment which could be useful in a university museum are selected. Since the university’s activities are versatile, the museum also acquires works of art and historical pieces. In 2019, it acquired furniture from the house of Wojciech Weiss (1875–1950), artist and rector of the Academy of Fine
Arts in Kraków. The old piano, tables, chairs and bookshelves have appeared in many of his paintings. The collections are stored and exhibited on the premises of the university library, while temporary exhibitions are held in various buildings belonging to the university. Some of the objects will also be accessible through the website of the
Kujawsko-Pomorska Digital Library (www.kpbc.uk.edu.pl), in the database ‛Memory of the People of Bydgoszcz – Archive of Oral History’ (www.pamiecbydgoszczan.ukw.edu.pl) and in the university repository (www.repozytorium.ukw.edu.pl).
