The Nature Education Centre in Kraków is a non-faculty section of the Jagiellonian University (UJ) located on the university’s 3rd Campus at ul. Gronostajowa 5. The centre currently houses a collection of natural science collections that were previously spread around a number of university entities located in various part of Kraków such as the Zoological Museum, the Geological Museum and Department of Anthropology at the Institute of Zoology and the Institute of Botany. The centre’s main aim is to amass and preserve zoological, geological, anthropological and palaeobotanical collections, and to make them accessible for carrying out scientific research at the Jagiellonian University, to initiate and promote various forms of academic activity in the field of the natural and the exact sciences in society. The centre’s exhibition space covers approx. 2,400 sq. metres, the main part of which is occupied by a permanent exhibition entitled: ‛The Evolution of Earth and Life’, in which a series of thematic blocks are presented devoted to the classification of animals, biogeography, evolutionism, ethology, anthropology, mineralogy, sedimentology, palaeontology and geological processes. The permanent exhibition also includes an astronomical block and a reconstruction of a 19th-century natural history cabinet. The remaining rooms are used for temporary exhibitions. The centre has modern storage facilities which consist of several large rooms for storing scientific collections, as well as specialist laboratories, including an entomological and molecular research laboratory and a lecture theatre and classroom.
